Our Story

BETA was founded in 2004 by a group of women who met by the garbage bins where they would feed the stray dogs and cats. This newfound friendship and devotion to animals led to the development of Beirut Ethical Treatment of Animals (BETA) which has since grown into a registered nonprofit organization in Lebanon, the U.S, the U.K. and France.

The war in 2006 ravaged our first shelter, forcing us to relocate to an abandoned pig farm, and with very limited resources, we renovated, repaired and restored this place to adapt it to 150 dogs.

But the number of animals that we fostered grew over the years and our shelter became unsuitable to uphold our high standards of welfare.
Determined to never turn a blind eye to mistreatment nor abandonment and facing imminent eviction from our second shelter, we worked tirelessly to obtain a permit for our new shelter – navigating various ministries in Lebanon for 6 long years.

Completed in 2021, our new home is built in accordance with the highest international standards including protecting the animals from all the elements – something that was impossible in our previous shelters.

Sustainably designed with solar panels, our shelter can now facilitate adoption procedures and comfortably accommodate 960 dogs, 250 cats, 2 donkeys, 4 horses, 2 monkeys, a rabbit, a red kite, 9 turtles and our Miss Piggy!

We have several play areas for our dogs to enjoy as well as a specially designated area for our senior dogs to live out their lives, happy and secure.
Our horses and donkeys are flourishing in their own stables and our monkeys are thriving in a sanctuary that imitates their natural environment. We also have a new aviary which houses our injured birds, allowing them to safely recuperate until they are fully healed and released back into their natural habitat. Our aviary is also home to our much loved injured red kite, unable to fly, he has found his forever home with us.

We’ve grown from feeding a handful of strays on the streets to caring for 1200+ animals. But we can’t and we won’t stop there.
We exist solely on the kindness of your donations, adoptions and assistance. With your continued help, we can continue to offer care, love & compassion to all animals, whilst we strive to find their forever homes.
