When Beta sent out its last newsletter in May 2009, something unexpected happened!
A Beta co-founder received a phone call from a girl claiming to be Sunshine's owner.
Sunshine is one of the dogs that Beta was planning on flying to Canada to be adopted.
She had been with us since 2006 and had no chance of being adopted in Lebanon. As we had mentioned before Sunshine is a 6 year old dog that we had found on the street in the 2006 war.
Some residents in the neighborhood had informed us that Sunshine indeed did belong to people but that they had fled and there was no one to take care of her. She was left all alone!
Sunshine's owners did leave the country but she was left with the father who was supposed to be taking care of her while the daughter and mother fled the country.
The father was not able to care for Sunshine anymore when things got too difficult and thought it best to let her go.
That is when Beta rescued her and brought her up to the shelter. The war ended and Sunshine's owners returned to Lebanon only to find that Sunshine was no longer in the apartment and they had no idea what had happened to her, the whole time thinking she was with the father.
People that remained in the area, simply told them that 'some people took Sunshine away'. What they didn't know is that Sunshine had been only a half hour drive away and in good hands. When Beta members rescued Sunshine, the neighbors had told them that the dog's name is Sunshine and we never changed it.
When our last dispatch went out, what we didn't know is that Sunshine's owners were on our mailing list and as they were reading our newsletter, without a clue in the world, they were shocked to read about a dog named 'Sunshine' that had been rescued in 2006 and that she was 6 years old and travelling to Canada. It had never crossed their minds that she would be with us because they had never before visited our shelter.
They immediately phoned Beta and gave a description of Sunshine, we asked them to come up and see if indeed she was their long lost dog.
To everyone's surprise, it was her!! After 3 years of not knowing what had really happened to their dog, they were again reunited!! It was a tearful and Joyful reunion and one that we will never forget!!
Sunshine did not go to Canada but she did go home with her owners and now lives a life that every dog deserves and with the people that love her and miss her!!
